SPD.org: Getty Images iPad App Essential For Designers

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Popular editorial design site SPD.org recently touted Getty Images for iPad as a must-have for all iPad-loving design professionals. In the article, 10 Essential iPad Apps for Publication Designers, author Robert Newman shares:

Getty Images, the popular stock photo agency, may work even better on the iPad than online. The app’s initial view is fun, a shifting gallery of editorial, creative, or archival photos. A nearly hidden “Easter egg”: shake the iPad to bring up images for a random keyword — good for when the creative juices aren’t flowing. The photo search is phenomenal, making it easy to search for keywords and build a custom lightbox from your favorite results. (Lacking a free Getty Images account, though, I wasn’t able to try the features of sharing lightboxes, viewing them in slideshow mode, and adding voice recordings.) Complex searches work better on gettyimages.com, but the ability to compare up to four photos full screen makes picking the perfect shot a treat. Once again, the iPad’s bright screen proves to be superb for displaying vibrant photography.

Ask an Übie: How to Write Great App Store Descriptions

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

We are fortunate to have incredibly thoughtful readers who love to ask great questions! In the past, we would dialogue with readers and respond to their questions over email, but it recently dawned on us that readers’ questions, and our subsequent answers, are definitely worth sharing with the entire Über-blog community, hence the new “Ask an Übie!” section on the right side of your screen. Go ahead, give it a look.

One of the most frequently asked questions from our reader/developer community is how we manage to publish so many popular apps. That’s a tough question because the answer is, in all actuality, one heck of a moving target! But, I can say that one of the most crucial elements of the app publishing/marketing process is writing a great App Store description. Oddly enough, many fantastic apps have terrible App Store descriptions – in spite of the importance – and are not capturing the maximum amount of potential downloads.

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

When we started developing Masque for the iPad, we were extremely excited about the possibilities it offered for users to create completely unique photos with one of the most basic tools around-their hands! The app was successful in its quest, and has gathered a huge following of loyal Masque lovers along the way – and of course, we love ‘em all right back. But there are still those out there who haven’t taken the leap to buy the app – and let’s face it, no matter how awesome something is, it seems even more awesome if it’s free. Enter Masque Lite!

Masque Lite offers the same functionality of the original App, but in a slightly downscaled free version. Here are some of the feature offered in Masque Lite:

Masque Frog

Key Features:

  • One-touch importing from Facebook, Flickr, or your Photo Library.
  • Unleash your creativity by selectively removing color from your photos with just the touch of a finger.

As many of you Über-blog readers know, Apple’s iOS 4 was recently released! As you can imagine, we folks at Übermind are very excited for many different reasons.

OS-header

First off, we are always excited to get a chance to flex our developer muscles on a new platform. Second, we love the opportunity that the new platform brings to the table. While we feel as though we have done a pretty good job developing for the iPhone so far*, we are excited about the challenges presented by a new operating system.
